[Alpacasite] Re: Pet Quality Definition

Hi Rosann,
Well, it needs to be said so here goes...
I managed to buy conformationally sound, well fleeced, healthy and
reproductively sound alpacas six years ago. And all without a breed
standard!
There are many books out there to reference before purchasing,
Hoffman's 'The Complete Alpaca' book especially, and even the Fowler
book has info, and even some pictures of conformationally sound
alpacas vs not. Mike Safley's 'Synthesis of a Miracle' can really
help on the fiber end. And last but not least, a healthy dose of good
old common sense :)) What an alpaca is supposed to look like has not
changed much at all since I first got into this business, no matter
what some may say. The biggest change I have seen is in fleece
production and fineness.

Finding a breeder you can trust, and feel confident in is a must for
new breeders. They can help you find, get your hands on, and discover
all these things for yourself.

It is possible to buy and breed healthy alpacas without a breed
standard. It is my belief that every breeder who has been in this
industry for more than a few years has an accurate handle on what is
sound and what is not, what fleece is best for their breeding program,
and how to make needed improvements in areas of lack.

Give me a jingle if you want to! Welcome to alpacas! :)
Ciao~
Rachelle
