Re: [Alpacasite] needing a sounding board of impartial people

Judith,

Your advice to Lori is spot on....great directions.

No low quality alpacas should be bred as it only hurts the overall industry objective. Genetic defects can only be passed forward...not good. Checking out the ARI registration is number 1 for breeding stock.

There are low cost alpacas out there from very good ranches. Some are thinning their herds or changing directions, while others might be getting out of the business.

It is better for the industry that these animals find homes with caring ranches and not find their way to the animal auctions to be made into zoo food, jerky etc.

Hat off to Judith....

Hi Lori -- There are a couple of ways to interpret your question, so let me ask you to clarify. Do you mean that other breeders or prospective buyers would consider your new animals "low quality" because you paid a low price for them? Or do you mean that other breeders or buyers would refuse to do business with you because you worked with the breeder with the bad reputation? Or are you concerned that a prospective buyer would hesitate because he/she would be unsure that the animals were legally yours since they came through an unreputable source?

Certainly you should be checking ARI records to see who the alpacas are registered to. Always ask to see the ARI certificate of any animal you consider buying.

If your concern is with the perception of low quality, what you pay/paid for your livestock is private information and a prospective buyer would likely not know it anyway. In any event, there are many excellent alpacas for sale at bargain prices because of personal circumstances of the owners; that does not lessen the quality of the animal in question. Every animal should be judged on its own qualities, not its price tag.

If your concern is others' perception that you were "in league" with the sellers by buying from them, I don't see that as anything I'd worry about. If you were acting as a broker for them to resell animals that aren't theirs, that would be different. Since you're simply taking advantage of their need to raise cash, and taking the time to ensure that your transaction is legal from the standpoint of the sellers' ability to convey good title, you haven't anything to be ashamed of.

The key to the issue, as I see it, is that you are fully informed of the sellers' ability to convey good title, and that you believe the prices are fair and reasonable and the alpacas are of the quality you want in your herd. The discussion we've been having has had to do with sellers responsibilities to prospective buyers. Unless you believe the sellers are enticing or luring you into a transaction that you would not otherwise contract, I see no reason not to buy the alpacas you're interested in. You're doing your homework as to legitimacy of the sale, so you should be fine.
