[Alpacasite] Re: Breeding Maidens (again) - - - laying on side for breedings
Hi Jeanne :)
We have a female who comes for breedings who will cush properly for breeding initially, but always ends up on her side for the rest of the session.
I have tried to get her to 'sit up' all to no avail. The first breeding we did with her the male started to crush her ribcage, causing her to open mouth breathe. Of course, I monitor all breedings and we got the male repositioned, this happened three times. The next time we bred her we positioned the male so his butt was facing down hill.... not the best angle for the male, but he is a large boy and he did just fine.
She lay on her side, looking at the sky, and they had a 'special moment' without her gasping for air!
I don't know why it is that some females lay on their sides, I have had some do it once or twice, but this one does it every time! She also 'catches' on the third time only. Maybe there is a correlation?
Ciao~

Subject: Re: Breeding Maidens (again)
I have a maiden that is currently away to be bred. She was scoped
and found to be reproductively sound by a vet and certified as such
before we purchased her. When she weighed in at about 115 pounds and
started cushing for our one gelding (who got bumped to another
pasture for such behavior), we figured she was ready for breeding.
Upon her first breeding, she went down as expected, but layed
partially on her side. The male tried his best, but didn't know
quite what to make of this new position. She rebred again, and again
layed partially on her side, but the stud now knew what to expect
from her and got the job well done, so we thought. Next week, she
spit off. YAY! Same with the following week. Then she rebred again,
but this time in a more properly cushed postition. The other farm
asked if she was to be scoped in case she didn't spit off again and
went down for the male. I said of course. Maybe in those 2 weeks of
spitting off she did conceive, lost it and maybe has a retained CL
or something else going on. So, maidens can be tricky in the
breeding department! I never did think of a hymen problem though!
