[AlpacaTalk] a note from John and Steve
A note from John Ferrante, Ph.D. and Steve Hull, Ph.D.
There are a LOT of misunderstandings, old history and recriminations being tossed about regarding the recommendation made by ARI and AOBA for the merger of the two organizations. Consider some thoughts from two old guys . . . By way of introduction; allow us to share our unique perspectives.
Both of us:
- are small breeders that have both served on ARI and AOBA boards
- have served on not-for-profit boards (other than livestock)
- know well members of each board as well as Darby and Margie
- have board strategic planning experience
- have been on boards that have merged/reorganized
- understand well the expression” know history, so you don’t repeat it”
Neither of us:
- are puppets of some “sinister influences”
- are threatened by the other board
- sees one organization “taking over the other”
- want to see the alpaca industry fall victim to what happened to the llama industry
- want to see more misinformation pandered about
We simply speak for ourselves and not either board on which we serve. The proposed merger is not perfect – nothing designed by a committee would ever be! However, literally thousands of board and committee hours have gone into this proposed merger. We both know that there will be a lot of effort to make the merger work. We also understand there are bumps in the merged road, but 11 of 14 current combined board members clearly see the inevitable endpoint to the course we are currently on. And we do not see an alternative put forth by naysayers – except “do the same thing”, a strategy that is simply unsustainable.
As you can tell we both strongly support this merger. We are both personally committed to put in many hundreds of hours to make it work. Allow us to do that. Vote “Yes” for the merger of ARI and AOBA.
Feel free to contact either of us with questions and know that we will both be here after this vote. You may quote/resend this note, but we request that you do so in full with no edits.
Thank you for listening . . . .
Respectfully,
John and Steve
