[AlpacaTalk] Introduction
Ya'at'eeh! (Greetings! in Navajo)
My name is Nikyle Begay, I am 23 and Native American of the Navajo Tribe in Northeastern Arizona. I've been raising Huacaya Alpacas for 2 years and have a herd of 11, 9 females and 2 breeding males. I also have Navajo-Churro Sheep, that I've been raising for 10 years and Rambouillet Sheep that I've been raising for 20 years.
My program focuses on producing healthy animals with a dense fleece, medium staple length and good crimp ratio, that conform to Registry Standards. Majority of my herd is unregistered but from GREAT registered lines. They graze with the sheep upon the arid southwest range and are fed supplements to ensure a proper diet.
I am a 4th generation Navajo Weaver and if you're familiar with Navajo Rugs, you know that they're almost always woven with Sheep's wool. This is how I acquired my first Alpacas, which was through trading my rugs for quality animals. In the beginning I've blended Alpaca fiber with de-haired or lamb Navajo-Churro wool and woven with it. Right now, I am focusing on using Alpaca yarn to weave softer blanket rugs and traditional rug garments.
Being that I am still very new with Alpacas, I hope to learn more with the use of this Yahoo! Group.
Ahe'hee (Thank You in Navajo),
Nikyle
