[AlpacaTalk] Help with felting

Hi,

I have knit a hat made from 45% alpaca, 45% merinoe, 8% microfibre and 2% viscose. I then washed and dryed it with a load of jeans. It shrunk "almost" enough to fit on my hat mold. It's a fedora-style hat so needs to have that kink in the top and a dimple on each side of the front. The pattern directs to paint the hat with water-soluble shellac to harden it (which is really needs to hold the shape too). My concern is that it will not only smell horrible but perhaps wash out when cleaned (or caught in the rain)! Can someone suggest a better, less smelly, and more reliable stiffener? Has anyone tried "Stiffy" used on fabrics?

Thanks so much for any suggestions!
