RE: [AlpacaTalk] Minerals / Copper
I don't think anyone is ignorant or should not give advise that works for them. Every farm needs to make the final judgement. We use calf Manna at times for crias when extreme cold, per the instructions. You are only suppose to give about 10% with your normal feed. It works great but when someone asks me about it, I am quick to note the copper is high and you should only mix 10% of your normal ratio in the feed and not to use it if you are in a high copper area. I am just saying that every farm is different and every field, water, feed is different. Supplementing is knowing what you supplement. Yes, I too have heard of copper toxicity in alpacas. The area I had heard about had high copper in the fields (grass and hay) however, they were giving alpaca supplement made for alpacas but it was too much for that area. They had to have the feed adjusted in that area for copper. Ask for advise but take the advise in the content that it was given, on that farm, in that area and yes, consult your vet. Always consult your vet when entering unsure health concerns. I run things by our vet all the time. I get his opinion and I make a decision. That is all I am saying, I believe there is a lot of gray area, no absolutes. Tina Travis Because they are ignorant. (I am included in this generalization) Is this the answer you were waiting to hear? I appreciate you bringing up the subject, really. But the exclamation points are getting old. I will do better research regarding copper, and will have labs run on the one girl I am feeding broodmare supplement. I do know that alpacas require more copper than sheep…….closer to goats but not as much as horses or cattle, so if I feed anything not labeled for alpacas, I will avoid those labeled for cattle and probably horses, too. Thanks for bringing this up. To anyone out there with skinny animals, please disregard my advice to feed Calf Manna or Broodmare grains. While it appears to be working for us, I would not want anyone to have negative results due to my ignorance. I want to know why people are adding more feeds that are not made for Alpacas & those other feeds have added copper in them!!!!WHY ARE PEOPLE DOING THIS?Then they freely advices others to do this .I know all about feed, hay, pasture, minerals. .My herd is fine---BUT i am concerned about all these Pacas that are getting all the extras that are not made for alpaca and they have ADDED copper!!!
