Thanks for including the point about more copies of mags in various places. People in situations where they must wait for anything need something to do...and I get so tired of the mags in Drs. offices, I can't tell you! There's a lot of informational stuff from drug companies (don't care), 'disease' foundations (unless it's about something I have, don't care), Field and Stream (don't care, but maybe you do), and list goes on with things I don't find interesting. At the same time, I'll pick about anything up if I've forgotten my knitting, book or my own magazine just to have something else to do while waiting........Alpacas would surely be a big hit just because they're so darned cute and appealing!
 
In any case, I recognize that may not be possible, but the idea is well received by me. I got tired a long time ago of being told, "we can't" -- well, if you go in with that attitude, no you can't. On the other hand, being positive really does help a lot...along with looking at any conceivable idea thrown on the table, regardless of how ridiculous it may appear at first glance.

I've been following this for a bit.
My other business is regional print advertising in national magazines.
 
Costs depend on a few different factors.
process/paper, postage/shipping, bind stop, poly stop etc....
(probably doesn't make any sense to you)
 
Any magazine, even targeting the same demographic can have higher cost
depending upon the above mentioned factors and the amount of circulation
it goes to.  AM is a relatively high quality/low circulation magazine.
 
The cost of producing AM is easily 55-65% of cost that may provide a
reasonable gross profit.  (then you of course have to deduct all administrative
costs, office expenses, taxes,  any commission paid on sales, .... and a lot
more things I could ramble on about...) In my opinion, the net is probably
not that much.  All print is having a tough time.
 
I would rather pay more money for the magazine as an AOBA member and see
50,000 comp copies going to doctor's offices, waiting rooms, airlines, salons/spas.
 
And yes, we do market to each other, but to grow the industry as a whole we need
to be exposed to more people & have greater visibility to the demographic market that
is looking forward to retirement, a lifestyle change or investment.
 
I really believe we all have to hang together or we hang separately.
 
Let's use AM, and direct AM for our benefit. 
Small scale;
Buy an extra copy or three, put a post-it-note, book mark or
business card on your ad page, and leave it in a waiting room.
When you stop at TSC or Barnes & Noble, take AM out of the back
and put it right down front. (I do every time I go in)
 
 
I think AM is a wonderful tool for all of us.

I want my Alpaca Magazine in PRINT.

I take it to the pasture to read sometimes, I bring out issues to display on farm day or give to new people.

The Magazine does NOT loose money. It is a cost of that advertising. the fact that it is in Barnes and Noble, tractor supply etc. Is good for all of us.

The cost of Alpaca Magazine should be figured into the advertising budget each year, and then thats it .. A cost of supplying this kind of advertising.. which in my opinion has been a very good thing for alpaca breeders for many many years.

Just like the TV ads it is a form of advertising and it cost money.. That is fine with me. I see it as one of the good things AOBA spends money on.

The E-blast was in horrible taste yesterday at the same time no less than what I have come to expect from the parties sending it out.

They have made it clear from the beginning who they want us to vote for, and who they don't want us to vote for..
