Re: [AlpacaTalk] what to use?

It helps out alot when you have cria wear diapers in the house.Works best with females but buying a lrger size and altering them with safety pins or tying the extra bulk with a hair tie or vecro will work for the boys. They make belly bands wih a pad in them for male dogs that tend to mark when in the house. That would work well on boys.I forgot to say the diaper needs to have a slit in it for the tail to come threw.

I  have also house broken a couple. They went in and out with my small house dogs.
While using the diapers we used Desitine on the little butt to make sure no irration started. Alpacas seem to love TV.They ussually will cush on the rug between the couch and coffee table and watch whatever was on.On nice days he went out in the pasture with the other cria and moms. His mom died at six weeks and his sister took to looking after him when he was out in the field very sweet. Just what has worked for me--hope it might help others too.

My bottle baby always had good poop, even while she was on the replacer.  I know this for a FACT, she lived in my house at night, and when she went to her stall, in the house, she would poop and pee.  I would get the pail behind her, so she wouldn't mess up her bed.

Oh, by the way, $1/qt is $4 per gallon. I got my whole cow's milk for $4 for 2 gallons, and a half gallon of whipping cream at Costco was about $5. So yes, I'd say the replacer was definitely NOT cost effective since my cria had to take 2-3 times the volume and still didn't always gain weight.

As for nearly losing her to heat stroke and dehydration, well, while she was on the replacer, she never had proper poop. Always very soft or sometimes liquid. As many of you know, diarrhea is a major cause of dehydration and weight loss. After I started on the cow's milk, instantly, good poop and she's never had scours since.

How can you blame the milk replacer for nearly loosing your baby?  I would think the heat stroke / dehydration had more to do with the problem, than the replacer.

The milk replacer is not more economical??  When I had my bottle baby, Brandie, I was buying goats milk at Wally World.  It came out to more than $16 a Gallon.  At one point, a snow storm closed the mountain pass, so the shipment couldn't get over the hump ( mountain ).  I got a product called Grade A Ultra 24, a multi-purpose, multi species milk replacer, it was $33 for  eight lbs. I added a Tbl spoon of plain yogurt per quart also.  It came out to about a dollar a quart.  Brandie sucked down 20 oz at each feeding.  She is doing and looking very well.

Labeling all milk replacer as bad, or useless, is a disservice to everyone.
