We use sheep's minerals and they have a bucket of it available when ever they need it.  I don't get to see them often and forgot the minerals were reddish colored.  I went into the barn and my gramma Rose came up and her lips were all red!  I panicked and thought they were bleeding!  My sister razzed me and said she has been eating her minerals.  :)  We usually have mineral buckets and feed buckets hanging on the boards in the barn lining the whole wall.  Our girls come in and check each bucket.  If no pellets yet, they may take a snippin of minerals until the pellets arrive.  It is funny to watch.  My sister walks along with the big bucket and scoop and puts pellets in as the crowd follows and one by one they fall off onto a bucket until each has their own.  Of course you get the piggy's and the matriarch who sticks her head into each bucket to eat what she can before the others get a taste.  :)  Ours seem to like the sheep's minerals.  Now, if anyone knows why we can't feed sheep's minerals, please let me know!!

Subject: [AlpacaTalk] minerals

 

I need to order more minerals for my guys. I have always used Dr Evans
E Formula; but thought I would ask what most of you here use.

My guy have never particularly liked these and won't take free choice.
I have to use them as a top dress on top of beet pulp so they don't all
fall to the bottom of the feeding bowls where they go to waste. The
pacas just won't eat them unless mixed in somehow. Somedays we are in a
hurry and/or don't have the beet pulp soaked and just need to feed and
get on. Those days they don't get minerals.

It would be great to be able to just offer free choice; would make the
twice a day feeding a but easier and faster.

For those who order Dr Evans formula, have you found a cheaper source?
I have always just ordered directly from him but am thinking it might be
available now at other outlets and perhaps a bit less expensive.
