[AlpacaTalk] Are you serious about selling alpacas?
It’s clear from the number of people advertising alpacas for
sale here that marketing them is getting more competitive
and the current economy is keeping most prices significantly
lower than a couple of years ago.
People are needing to sell, but don’t take the most important
step of all – having their own website and actively promoting
it.
In building a successful alpaca (or any other business) having
a dedicated website is essential. All of your promotion should
be aimed at getting traffic to that site, and collecting details
from your visitors so that you can follow up with them and
build a relationship over time. Making use of social networking
is also becoming more important in getting visitors to your
site.
If people are not pro-active in promoting their farms on the
Internet, they are missing out on the largest sector of the
market – over 90% of alpaca buyers start their research online,
and if your website doesn’t show up in searches, they won’t
find you.
Relying on third party sites is not good enough – you are
competing with hundreds of other farms and any work you do
to generate traffic only drives your visitors there to share them
with everyone else. That creates a commodity market – you
don’t have the opportunity to differentiate you and your farm
from the rest, so the buying decision will be made primarily on
price.
Try a search on the Internet for alpacas in your area and see
if your farm shows up well – if not, maybe it’s time to think
about how you can feature on the first page of Google (only
15% of searchers look past the top ten search results).

and ideas on how to improve it, or information on having
