Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: hard lump on lower lip

Glad to hear your girl is better!

I just remembered another thing people can check for when they see new lumps on alpaca faces. The day before shearing this year, one of my girls had a lump that was very hard, about the size of "shooter" marble. I thought, oh great, another vet bill for an abscess! I checked to see if it was just a small compact wad of cud, and it didn't move, which was why I thought abscess. I did push on it in case it was caused by something trapped between the teeth and gums... Didn't notice any change, but the next day she was completely normal. What was it? I have no idea, but I'm glad it went away! May have been a cudball. That's what I'm going with. :)

That was my first thought - probably because my male was so prone to jaw
abscesses and they were such a pain to treat. I was thinking maybe a
piece of hay stuck in her gum. But luckily by the time she came back in
from grazing a few hours later, it was noticeably better and was all
gone by this morning. My dd reminded me that this had happeded to her
last summer only much much worse - that was the midnight call to the vet
who informed she was not interested in having to learn a new breed of
animal. I am thinking she laid her face down in some ants - which have
just quadrupled around here the past few weeks. And yes we have lots of
wasps as well. So could have been either. I got into some of those
ants myself the other day and they left huge welts all up my leg...tiny
little ants they were too. Thank goodness nothing seriously wrong with
my girl and no vet bill for which I am very thankful.
