Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: shivering dam

Hi Cinda!
She's been fine all day....grazing, eating hay, staying with the herd, eating pellets tonight.....nothing unusual once the shivering stopped. No frequent potty trips......nada. I think I wrote that the OSU vet indicated torsion, but I've never seen anything to indicate that with just a little shaky shivers. Everything indicates those have more noticeable symptoms, though he indicated that she might not be in labor, but have a torsion that bothers her. I can't believe she'd eat as good all day if she had that much pain........but don't really know. I decided to just keep a close eye on her. And I'm going to do a day trip to Cleveland tomorrow unless when I go out early, she's got something else going on that makes me believe she's about to deliver. Time will tell, but I think she's okay ... and even though I can't hardly believe she got cold, you never know. ...it was pretty chilly this morning.

Thanks for asking about her! I'll let folks know if more develops since at least I know that a few can get that way before delivery.....thanks!
Susan

PS Weather wise, it's trying to clear and got to the mid 60's -- and the wind died down, so life is a little nicer!

Susan, your email came through in digest just now, late afternoon. How is your girl doing? One of my girls shivered a little in early labor. Nothing remarkable or that I worried about; I was more concerned that she seemed to be in labor at 6pm. She delivered easily the next morning.

But she also shivered a lot after delivery. I gave her 5cc calcium paste and her shivers went away. I would not have hesitated to give another 5cc if the shivers were better but not gone. You can overdose with calcium, as I recall, by giving too much all at once but not if given slowly over extended period of time.

Regardless please let us know how your girl is. Sending warm, dry West Texas sunshine your way.

They were all shorn 3 weeks ago today, so have a tad of growth plus have had time to acclimate to the weather, though it's been decently warm until yesterday. Anyway, the girls came running in for their feed and I noticed a girl that's 343 days pregnant shivering. I've never had one do that past the first or second day post shearing. She ate eagerly, but still shivering. This girl also had Meningeal worm late last summer, but no lingering effects have ever been noticed. I'm not sure whether it's just the colder temps or something more is going on. I'm going to find something to coat her with as soon as I'm done with this, but also just outright concerned about her. Obviously, I'll keep a close eye on her today since she could have this baby any day now...and also wondering if shivering could be a sign of labor or dystocia....and concerned that she won't tolerate the coat real well and it will be more of a liability than a help.

I'm a little down in the dumps, not to mention I think the animals don't like this overcast yucky, wet, awful weather either! Sunshine will warm my soul and this girls body! It's always good to have a dose of that!
