[AlpacaTalk] RE: electric fence

<<<<I am sorry if I sounded like I was badgering you, but I did feel
that you really needed to hear it all laid out with no punches pulled-
guess I was right, huh? :)) You will see a difference in your breeding
productivity and your female's health. It might take some time, and I
would have a repro exam done to see if there is any extensive, long term
damage when she is open, but believe me, your female is sooooo happy
with you right now!>>>>

Yep, you're my kind of woman! Pull no punches, take no hostages. I am
very forthright myself when needed, so have no problem taking as well as
I give :-). I hope you are right about the productivity. Having a cria
actually survive - and a female to boot! - has re energized my hopes of
having a nice herd one day. Now I just have to get busy learning how to
process all that wonderful beautiful fiber.

In defense of those of us who may seem to just keep on doing what we do
no matter all the good advice given - I don't know about others, but for
me, I take it all to heart, it always boils down to the realities of
what I can afford and many hard choices have had to be made since my
husband passed away and I have not really been able to bring in any
income due to the difficulties and high needs of the baby adopted the
month after he passed on - whew, that was a run on sentence! So don't
be *too* harsh on "us" or quick to condemn :-). Example in point -
"repro exam" - not only do I not have a vet that could or would do such
an exam, but I couldn't afford to pay him/her anyway.
I get pressure every which way I turn to "get rid of those alpacas, they
only cost you money". Those people just do not understand - that is NOT
an option, at least not while I still draw breath - I will keep my
alpacas and my dd's horses as she lives for those horses and loves them
as much as I do my alpacas.

Another hard decision was made last night - much to my 10yo's (and my
own) disappointment......no goats. Even tho she can get this cool Rural
Youth Loan to purchase them with and get the fences put up, I can't
afford to give them the medical care and preventatives they will need.
I realized that one reason the alpaca (ValleyVet/PBS) order has been
taking so long - besides my ongoing collection of information/knowledge
to try to get everything just right, decision making process coupled
with the constant interruptions - is that it is going to be several
hundred dollars and I keep dreading hitting that "buy now" button and
going ever deeper into debt, tho I know this is a necessary expense.
Last night I was finally ready to actually finally make the big order -
getting the 1/2" needles was the last decision to make - and I realized
that if we had goats the ivermec order would be twice as expensive.
Plus the confusion about the fencing, etc just all of sudden opened my
brain up to the fact that we are simply not in a position money nor time
wise to start our dairy goats yet :-(. I have been wanting some dairy
goats forever; but it will just have to wait; really hard pill to
swallow. Maybe bees I told my dd - no fences required :-); or we could
get that loan and expand the greenhouse and start trying to make money
selling organic plant starts and rooting woody ornamentals; but the
goats are just too much for now....the more I learn about them the more
complicated it becomes with the CAE and the CL and the escapes
necessitating major fencing considerations.

Have a great day!
Janice, out to hopefully finally finish pruning those apple trees as we
hit the upper 60s this afternoon, and get the broccoli, peas, and onions
in the ground - WOOHOO, as recently quoted by another awesome woman :-)
