hi Janice - thanks for the golden seal information - i bought mine from Richters in Ontario - it says "Super Strength Goldensea; Root" and then Racine de Hydraste and Hydrastis Canadensis (i don't know what either means) - i looked at Sleepy Hollow but there was some problem, can't really remember, maybe they couldn't ship across the border - i looked for a source in Canada and i've dealt with Richters for decades,so i trust their products.
and yes i followed all the directions for planting the goldenseal - four years til harvest is ok as it usually takes me that long to get around to something. I plant as much natural medicine on my farm as possible, for my family and my animals.
I appreciate your help

They are sturdy plants, not bothered by insects or disease, even the
deer don't eat them because they are so bitter. Other than humans - the
stuff is very valuable - never tell anyone where your goldenseal is
planted - their only problem seems to be slugs and moles....one of our
farmers in S GA was completely wiped out by moles. They have sandy
soil. I've never had either problem here in N GA.
My roots have been in the ground 5 yrs now, but I have not harvested
yet....been too busy. I just keep buying from Sleepy Hollow, but I like
knowing I have some in the ground; I will never be without this stuff.
I use the tincture straight on open wounds. Is yours from Sleepy
Hollow? I know their's is potent; from the analysis done on other
goldenseal products available they are quite weak or totally lacking in
hydrastis. I buy the large 4 oz bottle of the stuff because I go thru
so much of it, and never want to run out - and it's much cheaper that
way. I just keep refilling my little eyedropper bottle. I did dilute
it greatly when using in the alpaca's eye as it is an alcohol tincture;
and I dilute for mouth rinsing after flossing because it is so bitter,
but other than that I use it straight. On myself or my children just a
few drops on a wound or cut maybe 2-3x day is sufficient..
bother with it for minor stuff. When my gelding got slashed to the bone
on his neck this past year I was pouring it undiluted down into the deep
slash wounds.....I was terrified he was going to get a terrible
infection. I was doing this 2x day and then covering the neck wounds
with a diaper duct taped on to keep out dirt and debris. And I made
sure to keep opening the smaller wounds up so they wouldn't heal over
sealing in infection. He healed up beautifully in about 2-3 wks as I
recall. I used it on myself for a brown recluse bite a few years ago
that had eaten a crater in my arm. I was told to get myself to the
hospital as they have to cut out that necrotic tissue to keep the
infection/poison from spreading. I had tried all my other natural
remedies and nothing touched it. My eyes fell upon my goldenseal bottle
one night and I thought it couldn't hurt to try. It took about 6 wks
but the crater healed up and left not even a hint of a scar. It seems
expensive but the money it has saved me personally on doctors and vets
makes it quite a good value.
