I had to reply about the cria names too. I had a herdsire that we named Silver.com when we got him at an auction with his dam in 2003 when he was 3 days old. We unfortunately lost him last year to menengial worm. He however had a beautiful black boy this past year, and in homage to silver.com I tried to name his son Onyx.com. Obviously I couldn't. The new rules were in place - and I didn't even know about the new rules.
You know how sentimental we get about our alpacas, and I was really heart broken that I couldn't pay homage to the sire in that way. We had to name him Onyx dot com. It doesn't have the same look or feel. Oddly we always said the name Silver.com in full - but we never say Onyx dot com, it's just plain Onyx. I asked if they could change the rule, and the office said no. And their reason was that too many people were bending the naming rules. and that by adding a period or an apostrophe was confusing well known alpacas with others. I really didn't understand what they meant by it. and still don't. to me what is even more confusing is when a name includes the word Accoyo or Peruvian in it - but the lineage isn't 100%. That's what is a shame and a sham to me. I even wrote to the board of directors to ask if they would change it just this once, and months later they replied "no" to me.
At this point I'm fine with it. I'm used to it - no big deal. But at the time I was really heartbroken by it. amazing how we get tied to these animals isn't it?
