[AlpacaTalk] Advertising discussion
<<Heather--I do not want this to become another alpaca market forum but
I do appreciate that we could mention a seminar or event. Forums like
this also help me to get to know alpaca farmers/ranchers all over North
America, help me to know what is going on in the alpaca world and let
me make decisions in who I would or would not want to do business with.
I don't comment much but I do watch and read the posts quite often and
yes, everytime you post, you make a statement (advertisement) about your
Alpaca Farm to me and all others on this forum. Robin >>
I agree with Robin about mentioning seminars and events; tho they are
not of personal interest to me at this time, I still think they are
helpful to those that are and I have a handy dandy little delete button
for myself. But certainly should Marty or Norm Evans or any of a number
of other folks be coming to my area I would certainly want to
know.....and have no other way of knowing since I could not afford to
keep up membership dues in the various organizations that might
otherwise have notified me.
I also enjoy hearing about Heather's farm and everyone elses' for that
matter. It helps flesh you all out and make you "real" to me. I am not
trying to sell, so I am not competing with anyone here nor worried about
anyone competing with me for sales. I am just trying to find out the
best way possible to care for my dearly beloved pacas and do the best I
can by them.
My long range plans were to enter the fiber world....but I got
sidetracked about 10 yrs ago with the international adoption world and
started adopting human babies; I am still hoping, at my elderly age, to
adopt one or two more. So fiber continues to wait.....piled up all over
my house in pillow cases :-). I haven't even stuck a toe in that world
yet as the glimpses I have had tell me it is *huge* (the info to be
learned)! And I am not yet ready to start assimilating all that info.
I am totally intimidated by those of you that have been doing it for
decades. Oh my, how will I ever learn all I need to know? Heather, can
I come apprentice with you for about a year?
In the meantime, I love my "pet" alpacas like crazy and can't imagine
life without them. Personally I hope the prices do come down.....ok ok,
so shoot me, (but please don't eat me), so more people can enjoy these
marvelous pets :-0. If only I had room and money to take in all those
poor alpacas that can't be "given away" and save them from the butcher
:-(. Honestly, I stayed underground for many many years because I had
managed about 10 yrs ago to stumble upon an unregistered herd kept by a
very wealthy very eccentric little old lady who had many different
"exotics" on her mountain; she allowed them to live a "natural" life. I
was able to talk her into selling me an orphaned female (my dear dear
Allie, the one that recently had the severe eye injury and the one that
carries the big belly under her) very very cheap. I raised her from
babyhood along with my baby at the time - both are now 10yo. I can't
tell you how much I love her (both of them); and how precious she is to
me (both of them).
I had been "hanging around" alpaca shows and seminars and visiting farms
but I knew the day would never come when I could spend that kind of
money for any animal; but oh how I loved these critters. I became
instantly ostracized when it became known what had transpired. I
understood; with that much money at stake no one wants to see
unregistered relatively cheap animals become common. I dropped out of
the alpaca world and enjoyed my little herd, which I was able to slowly
build over the years by stumbling upon similar situations. Well I
didn't actually "stumble" upon them, I searched them out. The death
toll has been heavy the past few years and my dreams of a large herd
have pretty much disappeared. That is what brought me here, and it has
been a pleasure to meet so many wonderful people that share my love of
the alpaca. And the collective knowledge has been and is invaluable and
greatly appreciated. I wouldn't want to see this list become a sales
and marketing list either.
Warmly, Janice in GA
