Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: Check off the kind of marketing YOU want! Now: Advertising discussion

Like many of the rest of the members, I prefer that the amount of marketing be restricted.  While some information IS valuable to others, much of it is repeated endlessly on list after list after list.  I get Ellie's posts on at least a dozen lists, and frankly once a week is enough!  My objection to Ellie's posts is that the only reason Ellie belongs to any of these lists is to market her services/books, etc.  I have no objection to occasional marketing posts by members who participate regularly in all aspects of the list: who ask questions, who offer suggestions or who post their experiences with different topics.  However, I think people who only join the list so they can advertise their products or services are a disservice to the rest of us who are interested in the shared experiences and wisdom of other participating members.

In response to someone else's post about the AN Forum not allowing marketing of seminars, shows, etc., it's important to remember that AN has a separate place where those events can be listed for free.  We want people to have important information about events and activities as well, but we put that information on a dedicated page, as well as breaking them down and listing them on the relevant regional pages.

Hi, Just wanting to chime in about advertising etc. I was quite surprised
when I first joined alpacasite and found out that upcoming seminars etc.
were not promoted. As a fairly new breeder I was looking for seminar info.
For awhile there it seemed like unless you were on the "inside" with big
breeders you had no idea of what was going on and what was good.

I think it is ultimately self defeating not to have a policy of limited
seminar promotions. Perhaps a weekly post with upcoming seminars,
locations, etc and a link for more info. Of course, then it is imposing on
our listmistress to coordinate this task (or whoever she delegates this to)

This is less like advertising and more like community service. Marty McGee
stuff, Fecal and U/S seminars, natal clinics and wet labs, all of this stuff
is vital to the breeder (and alpaca!). So while I don't need or want to read
about the great deals people have on their animals, fibre, breedings etc.
When someone calls me and asks where can I take a prenatal course or I'm
going to be in the US at a certain time and would love to take a course when
I am there, it would be great to have a resource that could help. (Right now
it is a matter of checking the various associations, ARI, AOBA, Suri
Network, Alpaca Canada, Alpaca Ontario and all of the State associations,
Alpacanation, Alpacastreet, etc...)

Just my thoughts on a cool Saturday morning...
