Re: [AlpacaTalk] Problem with Newborn Cria
Susan:
I've heard about that foal study and there's a part of me that tends
to swing that way. On the other hand, I hear tell around these parts
that some folks are doing something of an informal study. What I
heard earlier in the summer is that every animal not transfused with
plasma died within two weeks. Now, this is NOT scientifically done,
so..........
supplement was done (either colostrum or follow up with milk), what
level of cleanliness was maintained (knowing full well that bacteria
live everywhere and can't be really controlled in a barn setting),
the hardiness of the crias (like whether or not they even attempted
to nurse)....in short, I don't know really anything. I don't know
anything about horses or their physiological make-up, but I guess the
standard answer to many things is, "they ain't alpacas". In any
event, though the foal study was interesting, I'm going to do
everything I can for a cria, especially a female......
prices have dropped way lower and way faster than I anticipated,
they're still worth a little money....not to mention the heartbreak
when you have to lose one.........
scientific study like was done for the foals? That would really give
us the kind of answers we need!....maybe!
