[AlpacaTalk] RE: Lumpy Jaw

<<She is on two types of antibiotics - penicillin and another to
target Actinomycosis bovis [I can't remember the name]. She has
already lost more condition than the other alpacas - and the teeth
showing seems to be due to the deformed jaw.

Ugh, this sounds awful Mandy. How is she today?

Several years ago my stud male, the personable and sweet Charlie Brown,
now deceased, had an ongoing battle with jaw abscesses. We treated and
treated and treated......and treated. I had a decent vet (horse/cow) at
that time. We pulled teeth. He had several different abscesses. One
in particular ate a huge hole in the bottom of his jaw. As I recall it
took well over a year, possibly two, to fully resolve. Constant
antibiotics and cutting and draining. It was a real battle. Those
anerobic bacteria are real buggers.

I don't know a thing about lumpy jaw. But having seen what I've seen in
the past few years, I would be getting Goldenseal in there asap and as
often as possible. I have seen that stuff clear up *everything*
bacterial and fungal (not as great with viral stuff). I didn't know
about it when my Charlie Brown was going thru his entrenched battle with
the jaw bacteria. *I* would be trying to inject it directly into the
abscess....full strength, knowing what I know now. It is very bitter
stuff and I would imagine quite difficult to get them to take orally.
And I wouldn't think systemically it would be as effective with encased
anerobic bacteria; I would want it directly in the location where the
bacteria are. The research is scientific and impressive. The US Army
has found it more effective than antibiotics for bacterial ailments
(diarhhea)of unknown origin in soldiers fighting in icky places. It has
demonstrated its effectiveness against antibiotic resistant staph that
is killing people around here. It has demonstrated its effectiveness
against the mouth bacteria that causes heart disease in people.

I don't know what you have available in New Zealand, but the brands
available in health food stores in the US have been tested and shown to
be of extremely low potency. The only brand I know for certain (I've
seen the test results and personally know the people who make it to be
of the highest ethical standards) to contain sufficiently high levels of
the active alkaloids is available from Sleepy Hollow Herb Farm dot com.
Tell him you need it for an alpaca.....he is getting used to that
:-)and he will ship it out that day. Get the 4 oz bottle.....I just
ordered 3 more myself, I have been going thru it rather fast around here
lately :-(.

Good luck!
