[AlpacaTalk] Re: How do you breed great blacks?

Hello Heather-You couldn't be more on the mark! We exclusively breed
for solid black fleeced Haucaya and our research has shown that should
improvements be necessitated outside the blacks that the silver grays
are the optimum choice. I say necessitated in that you most likely
will not get an 18 micron fleece from animals that have 20 micron
fleece. Those who have been breeding to the whites, fawns, to improve
the fleece are experiencing increases in color contamination,
producing some great show animals, but questionable progeny (strictly
based upon color output). If your program finds that acceptable there
is some nice fleece being developed, however, we are not certain how
marketable the fleece is to end markets.

I would ask if someone has analyzed the data from ARI, Australia, New
Zealand, or other sources to determine cria fleece color frequency
expression based upon dam / sire fleece color? I am aware of Mike
Safleys color calculator and Elizabeth Paul's The Alpaca Color Key.
