Re: [AlpacaTalk] Teaching to walk

Hi Jen,

I have one like that too, but wouldn't consider her halter broken (trained?) until she does what I want on lead.? This was last summer.??I have the long line from Marty McGee - I think its 20 ft, and I put her halter on, and then go to the end of the line and wait.? If possible, do this in a long, narrow aisle or pen.? Eventually my girl moved.? Still doesn't walk very well on a lead, but that's my fault because I haven't worked with her since - I didn't need her prepared for a show or anything, and then school started up.? This summer she delivered her first cria, and I may or may not get back to her, as I have 3 youngsters from last year to work with.

Saw your question about flies also - for the past many years I have used Fly Predators, but I got chickens and guineas this year, and was told they would eat the fly predators.? People say chickens don't eat flies, but I only have two guineas, so I don't think they can take care of them all by themselves.? I still have a few flies buzzing around my portch (they were here in the years I had the fly predators), but there are hardly any in the alpaca pasture.

Subject: [AlpacaTalk] Teaching to walk

I have a very very stubborn female that is three years old. She wasn't
worked with much when I bought her. I am trying to teach her to walk. I
have halter broke her. But walking is proving to be a great challenge.
I am looking for any suggestions on this. She puts on the breaks and
won't walk for me. It is basically I pull her and/or push from behind.
Her fleece companion broke nicely and now walks well for me. But she is
not willing to participate with the program lol
