Re: [AlpacaTalk] coughs

Hi Kathy,
Coughing can be caused by many things. Is this just a short coughing
fit or episode? Oftentimes around here, if the alpacas have an
argument, usually over pellets or hay, and especially if the fight
involves spitting, the loser will begin coughing or sneezing or both,
after the fight. Then the droopy lower lip is evident with the
unnerving (for newbies) "locked jaw" where the loser will have his/her
jaw stuck open and not be able to chew properly for several minutes.

Sometimes, they will cough or sneeze just as we do from allergens or a
dust stirred up from a sudden gust of wind. Or from getting some hay
caught in the throat from inhaling too quickly in the beginning of one
of these disagreements. :) Just like we do!

If the condition doesn't resolve in a few to several minutes, please
elaborate on symptoms including what led up to the coughing and any
environmental factors. If this is an on-going problem, the best advice
is to call an experienced camelid vet for diagnosis.

And please give us your location and full name. It is often helpful to
know these details so local farms can be of more immediate help, or to
pin-point regional issues.

Best of luck
Heather
