Hello Janice...first we are sorry about the loss you experienced. It
hits the heart hard and we feel what you have gone through. We did
have one other thought; aside from the obvious regarding the cherry
trees have you had the soil tested for other possible toxins? We know
of one farm that bought from a cabbage grower who experienced many of
the symptoms you describe only to find that a chemical applied over
the years by the cabbage grower was not only toxic and lethal to
Alpacas but was very residual and resistant to breaking down. This
may be an avenue you might also wish to pursue, again through the
County Ag Agent in your area. Calling the county will generally get
you to the right persons. Good luck, Michael

Thank you, I appreciate it. It was unbelievably heartbreaking. And has
dampened greatly my enthusiasm for these wonderful creatures. When I
lost all 3 of the babies left behind by my wonderful sweet stud boy
Charlie Brown I was just sick sick sick. He just had the greatest
personality and had survived so much. When he first came to me he spent
the first 6 mos in the pasture with his ears flattened and wanted
nothing whatsoever to do with humans. His papers revealed he had never
lived any one place more than a few months in his 3 yrs of life. He had
traveled all over the NE from one auction to another. He had on a
terrible halter that had grown into the skin on his nose. Guess he had
worn it his whole life. He was totally unapproachable. But time and
patience finally won him over. I got the halter off him and he turned
into the biggest pet of them all; so very easy to handle and just
personality plus. He survived the menegial worm; he survived 2
tooth/jaw abscesses that left a big hole in his chin. He was a bit lame
after his bout with the worm and Dr Evans said he wouldn't be able to
mate. Guess again, he was the biggest proudest stud and wasn't likely
to let a little lameness slow him down! He was my handsome Charlie
Brown. Losing the mom and baby after baby after baby has just sucked
the joy out of raising these guys.
Anyway, yikes about the cabbage farm. I know this farm used to be a
corn farm.....but I have been here 15 yrs (and am an organic farmer) and
I know nothing was grown for many years before. I'll check into that as
well. What do they do, take a soil sample for toxic chemicals?
I just had my guys sheared. They are unbelievably skinny. One of the
babies that lived for 8 mos and appeared to be perfectly healthy just
laid down and died one evening for no apparent reason. I had him
sheared before we buried him because I wanted to get a good look at him
for possible snake bite. He was terribly skinny.
These guys all get fed alpaca feed with Dr Evans minerals 2x every day
plus free choice hay. There is no way they should be this skinny??
Thank you for all the input,
Janice in North GA
