RE: [AlpacaTalk] fleece stat averages

Hi Emaly,

We like to see over 4# annualized blankets on cria
fleeces, but at least 3#. That is for approximately
20 microns. After that, 5#+. The other thing is that I
have noticed the 2nd yr only increases a bit because
the alpacas are doing quite a bit of growing from year
1-2 and are putting less energy into fiber production,
but that is not always the case. I have a 6 yr old
female that produced a 4.5# blanket at 29 microns
(2007). 2006 she produced 3.8# blanket. She is always
nursing and pregnant and I was so pleased!

A couple of things...We do not geld any of our males,
so I can't give you info on what they produce compared
to intact animals.

The other thing we have found is that you can't always
go by microns. Unfortunately, that is what you are
going by when purchasing an alpaca, but the feeding
habits of the owner make a huge difference when they
over feed or don't feed really good quality food.

Another idea is to find a male with the type of fleece
you like and microns and have him gelded. There are
plenty of low priced intact males out there these
days.

Steph
