RE: [AlpacaTalk] micron counts

Hi Amy,

You can compare 2002 through 2004 and see that her fd (fiber diameter; it
means micron ) was 21.6 in her cria coat and only 22.0 by the time she is 4
years old. That is nice; she has fine fiber for a fawn girl. If her
shearing weight is 6 lbs overall in her 2003 or "tui"fleece, (the benchmark
year, many think) you don't have enough information to accurately assess,
but can extrapolate that her micron count remained fine as it was both the
prior year and the year following.

SD and CV the 3.4 and 15.9, respectively, are both ways of measuring
consistency. You want to find an Standard of Deviation of less than 5.0,
preferably, and she has that. While it has risen slightly over the years,
it is still in the nice range. Her Coefficient of Variation, which is
linked to the SD, should fall slightly from year one through year 3 , but
instead it rises. However, we want it to remain under 20 and it has been
15.9 the first time measured and only 19.4 when measured again 2 years
later; so it is also a quality measurement.

CF means comfort factor.how does it feel next to the skin. It I s only
measured in 2004 and it is nice there.95.3 is a good number for wearing as
clothing. A crimp of 37.3 means she has light rather than strong or boldly
deep crimp. We'd like to see a number in the 40's and in the 50's is
superlative. Overall, this is a nice girl .at least through 2004. Her
numbers will degrade over time, but we want them to do so slowly. I'd
think this was a nice girl, so long as conformation and bite, as well as
fertility also are what you are looking for.

Now, I hope that helps.I'd say, from an overall clip on a 2 year old of 6
lbs, that she is fairly dense also. So this looks like a nice girl, above
average if her numbers are still holding. Remember, a white girl is usually
finer than a colored one to begin with, so if you have a (for instance) dark
brown who starts with a 16 or so ..she is "extremely fine".whereas, if she
had the same numbers as a white, she'd only be "fine" at the same age and
number.

For more information look at the Yokum-McColl or Ian Watt's websites.they
both have information which explains the derivation and purpose of the
numbers.

Best regards,

Subject: [AlpacaTalk] micron counts

I need help understanding the micron counts. I am so new at all this and
cant find any sources to read about this online.

I am looking at a light fawn huacaya 2001 female. Her micron count was:

2002: 21.6 3.4 15.9 1.4
2003: Shearing weight 6 pounds
2004: fd22.0 sd4.3 cv19.4 cf95.3 curve37.3

Is any of this good? Bad? Average? What am I looking for?

Amy
