Re: [AlpacaTalk] Re: response to Heather's request for information
My original question was "Are a few people in AOBA benefiting more than the rest of the membership?" If so, the tax laws have been broken. To qualify for non-profit status, a certain person (people) cannot benefit more than others.
Tax write-offs for donating office space to AOBA is benefiting certain people.
The benefactor program that excludes (due to the cost) most of the membership is benefiting certain people.
The question is not whether it was generous of you, Libby. The question is whether is was legal or not. The answer to me, is no it wasn't legal. That is the whole subject on AOBA. Is it conducting itself in a legal manner?
AOBA has over $1 million in CD's in the bank. AOBA really could afford to pay its own rent.

John,
The space in the building had to be vacant in order to offer it to AOBA.
But if used by AOBA, it could not be offered to anyone else.
I don't care if you think the donation is generous or not. Thanks for at
least acknowledging that we didn't get anything in return for it. We did
it for AOBA. I responded to a question by Heather or I wouldn't have
mentioned it at all. I'm not surprised that such a donation is the subject
of criticism.

Libby, it would seem that this is a bit of a half truth, don't you
think?
It was very generous to offer the space to AOBA for three years, and
true that you did not ask for anything.
It would seem to many though that the write-off is the equivalent of
recieving something.
Was the building occupied by any other tenent at the time of the gift
to AOBA? I ask this because I have heard rumors that it was vacant
at the time, and I do not want to give unwarrented substance to
rumors. That said, if it was vacant, it would seem that there were
additional benefits to having a tenent move in, since things like
insurance and security for a vacant building are more expensive than
an occupied building - resulting in additional savings for Mini-
Storage.
As Ben Franklin said, "A penny saved is a penny earned."
There are many ways to save, or make, money by helping others, and
certainly nothing wrong with it. In fact, it is recognizing this and
taking advantage of such opportunities that set truly successful
people apart. The books "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" do a good job of
explaining how these different perspectives on the world contribute
to, or hinder, one's personal success/wealth.
So, I freely acknowledge that you asked for nothing in giving this
space to AOBA for three years. I have a bit harder time with the
assertion that you received nothing - but I guess that depends on how
we each define the term for ourselves.
