[AlpacaTalk] Fw: [Alpacasite] RE: All kidding aside...the real scoop on alpacasite and alpaca politics.
Hello all,
I sent John Pinkowski a copy of my post because it concerned him. Without
contacting me, he posted this but because he's not a member of AlpacaTalk,
it bounced back. He then contacted me and asked me to post it for him so
here it is. He also gave permission to forward it to anyone. I appreciate
his taking the time to clear the air. He provided some information I also
didn't know and it is appreciated.

Time has slipped by but what Libby says about the origins of the Alpaca
online group, known as Alpacasite, is correct. However, it wasn't initially
called Alpacasite, that was a term I coined and used for my personal farm
site. The forum was to talk about important things, like vet care,
discussing breeding, colors, showing, pasture management, marketing, and
other useful things. I initially paid to host the site, as it cost money
back then. I asked for sponsors and got them willingly to offset the costs.
I never made any money just break even operation. Then along game Yahoo
Groups where we could do this for free.
The site that I moderated, on more than just a few occasions degenerated
into name calling and general meanness. I even held up the site a day or
two
to make everyone "cool off". I then started the AlpacaPolitics site. This
was to move the Politics OFF the General Forum Alpacasite. I also started
an
Alpacatransportatio
exists.
Libby is again correct that I was threatened with lawsuits for what other
people said, and there is law precident that I would not be responsible,
but
who wants to hire lawyers to defend yourself when you are right, and not
even involved. It was a burden that I relieved myself of. Since that time I
have not even read ONE email of Alpacasite or the Politics forum. I took my
name off the automatic email list, but kept access in case I wanted to look
something up. This email that I am responding to now was sent to me from
Libby, so I read it and felt compelled to respond to validate her email.
Libby is right, I turned over alpacasite moderation to Mr. Horn, and never
sold anything, made any money (I wish I could have, after all we are all in
business or work don't we!), Libby, Jerry, Magical Farms and anyone in
their
family never had a conflict of interest in alpacasite, the politics site or
anything else I moderated. I can personally say Libby, Jerry, Ty and Tripp
are the most down to earth, loving, caring, and special people I know.
Anyone that doesn't believe that doesn't know these people for who they
are.
I can confirm the comments that Libby mentioned about nasty phone calls,
nasty emails, threats and so forth. I never noticed any personal gain. I
felt that when I met people at shows that they labeled me along with the
site. It was best for my reputation to leave it.
Points:
1) Libby and Jerry never bought Alpacasite, or provided any renumeration of
any kind for the site. It was transferred to Mr. Horn gratis.
2) I don't see why a site can't be sold but that is not a debate I want to
have. Back in the early internet days, names were sold, email lists were
sold, so I imagine the site could have been sold. Today it is different.
There would be privacy issues and so forth. Needless to say I never sought
out any renumeration for divesting the site. The only money that I took in
was about $20 a month from monthly sponsors to defray the costs when the
site had to be paid for, when it became free, I no longer took sponsors.
Too
much of a headache....
3) I think the old software was majordomo or something like that. It was a
long time ago. I don't know if I ever saved any email from that.
4) Libby and Jerry never owned Alpacasite, and never asked me to be their
moderator.
5) I looked for people that were interested in moderating the forum when I
was tired of the problems. Rick and I mutually came across each other. I
don't believe I have ever met Rick in person. Jerry and Libby (et al) had
nothing to do with the transfer or to whom. I don't remember many people
wanting to be the moderator. If it wasn't for Rick Horn, I probably would
have shut down the site forever. I imagine it would have been started again
though.
Truthfully,
