[AlpacaTalk] ARS/AlpacaWatch Update
Hi Everyone,
If you have not read about Dr. Purdy's request for samples from
alpacas with the active virus please read the next post. It is a good
opportunity to help.
I am still following a number of cases with seriously ill alpacas.
However, the numbers that have moderate to severe cases has decreased.
At this point most of the alpacas are getting mild symptoms, and recover
quickly.
Here are the current numbers:
Total herd size reported: 4627
Total number reported infected: 2369
Total number of deaths reported: 49 from owners and 6+ from
vets/universities
Reports of infections: 37 States
Reports of deaths: 21 States
Reporting farms: 150
Keep the reports coming in!
I spoke to one of the early farms that had symptoms and deaths. They
have now been with out symptoms for 4 weeks, and they are optimistic
that they are finally all clear.
I am encouraging everyone to read Dr. Steve Hull and Dr. Tom
Cameron's article; it is posted in the library. If you attend
shows, have transports, do any type of outside breeding it will be very
helpful in cutting down your exposure to virus.

We currently have 673 members. I would like to see the membership at
1000, world wide, by the end of the month. Send out the web Site address
to any farms that you can contact information on. www.AlpacaWatch.

Please note that I am making some changes to the site. All of the ARS
material is now under one link. You will still find all the same
information there. This is part of setting AlpacaWatch as a long-term
alert system.
Thank you,
Janet Morrow
