[AlpacaTalk] Continuing Education

Wow!

This past weekend I attended a seminar group over two days taught by our own
Steve Hull. It was "All Things Considered" on day one. I had first
attended one of these seminars in 2005. I came because our industry is
moving forward so quickly that I was suspicious that most of the information
had been changed. Boy has it ever!

This seminar was excellent! It covered pasture, nutrition, husbandry,
breeding, birthing, weaning.all aspects of hands on management. To me it
proved our need as an industry to continue to constantly update our
information. Now that many of us are maintaining animals who are living
into their second decade -it had a good section on the more geriatric
aspects of the still fertile and productive dam.

Ever have a baby who would not nurse or a dam who had no milk? Well, there
is much new and useful information about making the dam/cria connection
quickly and easily.something I have from time to time needed very badly!
Domperidone may be the answer to your prayers! Ever wonder why that mom is
NOT very motherly? Need to know when you can or cannot use Banamine or
Torbugesic or what time is best to give the CD& T booster shot? Which type
to give? Why do some folks say you must give BoSe and some swear it kills a
cria? Both are, by the way right.each for their own locality! What cuts
the likelihood of cria sepsis by 80 % and costs less than 15 cents? Well,
if you continue to update your knowledge.you will have this information and
much more at your fingertips.

Day two was Advanced Alpaca Reproduction.with hands on use of ultrasound
equipment to visualize the condition of your dam's uterus. We were all
allowed to bring our animals to the seminar site.and have them ultra-sounded
for learning purposes. The host farms were Biosecure and had planned for
the comfort and care of our animals very carefully! Very important
information you can use now to ensure you understand the reproduction cycles
of your breeding animals was provided in clear, understandable language.

None of this would have been possible without the kind host farms Camanche
Ranch and Somerset Farms.owned respectively by Michael and Carolyn Scott and
Diana and Jack Jordan who hosted graciously and kept us and our animal
friends ridiculously well fed and comfortable. Of course it goes without
saying that Steve Hull was his usual patient and well informed self.pulling
off a two day one man show with skill and aplomb. I wanted to thank
everyone who worked to make this possible in Northern California. It was
absolute excellence in every aspect!

This is such a great resource for our industry. I hope that this is an
example of one of the great "travelling seminar" that can come your way if
your local farms put your heads together. In this industry it is synergy
and cooperation rather than competition that will build a great success in
business for each and all of us. This is a wonderful example of that view
put into action.

Thank each and every host and Steve Hull as well for a wonderful,
informational, fun, and valuable program! Let us hope it can come again at
least once a year to somewhere near everyone on Alpacasite. It is a
wonderful gift and investment in your prosperity as well as the quality,
health, and comfort of your alpacas!
