[AlpacaTalk] Re: Alpaca Love & Special Needs Child
Welcome to the list!
Yes, I agree whole heartedly with my esteemed alpaca friends! Let
us know where you are and I'm we can get you in touch with a farm
close to you. Taking your child to actually "see" the alpacas will
answer alot of questions for you.
Then once you decide the what ,when and the where, we'll be better
equiped to send you in the right direction.
Best wishes,

can tell you that alpacas seem to have a sixth sense about disabled
folks. We have a yearly open house for our vegetable customers and
one family brings their brain damaged child who is confined to a
wheel chair and it is very interesting how the shy animals will come
up and say hello and tolerate her uncoordinated and rapid movements
when they would bolt if I did them.

appropriate, because they are what we call prey animals and unless
the child is peaceful in the pasture, they might not be able to
interact much. I have heard that autistic kids respond very well to
them and vice versa.

response of your family, and how alpacas will fit into your life,
then geldings might be a good way to start. Also if you have no
livestock experience, then it might be a good idea to learn about
taking care of alpaca geldings instead of jumping right into
breeding and birthing. You do need to have two alpacas because they
do not fair well if they are the only alpaca. They are a herd
animal and feel exceptionally vulnerable in isolation from other
alpacas.

that might be therapeutic for your special needs child. So there
you go! Hope this is helpful, if you need more specifics, feel free
to give me a call
