Re: [AlpacaTalk] Alpaca Love & Special Needs Child
Hello New Inquirer!
Welcome! I am not sure what your child's special needs are, but I can tell you that alpacas seem to have a sixth sense about disabled folks. We have a yearly open house for our vegetable customers and one family brings their brain damaged child who is confined to a wheel chair and it is very interesting how the shy animals will come up and say hello and tolerate her uncoordinated and rapid movements when they would bolt if I did them.
If your child is challenged with ADD, then alpacas may not be appropriate, because they are what we call prey animals and unless the child is peaceful in the pasture, they might not be able to interact much. I have heard that autistic kids respond very well to them and vice versa.
Alpaca breeding stock is expensive and if you are unsure of the response of your family, and how alpacas will fit into your life, then geldings might be a good way to start. Also if you have no livestock experience, then it might be a good idea to learn about taking care of alpaca geldings instead of jumping right into breeding and birthing. You do need to have two alpacas because they do not fair well if they are the only alpaca. They are a herd animal and feel exceptionally vulnerable in isolation from other alpacas.
The other part of the equation is the use of the fiber and how that might be therapeutic for your special needs child. So there you go! Hope this is helpful, if you need more specifics, feel free to give me a call
