Re: Suspected Spam:[Alpacasite] a newbie who learns somthing new almost every hour neverr mind everyday!!!
Hello Lori,
This is so true. When we first started raising alpacas, I was told I
needed to get some cow colostrum by my vet. I obediently contacted a dairy
farm near us and asked if they could sell some colostrum. They said it was
not legal to sell colostrum but the next time their cow "freshened," they
would call me and I was welcome to all of it. I waited with baited breath
for the phone call and hurried down to the farm with my precious container.
They could barely contain their laughter when I held up my 8 oz cup
container....then my eyes found the 4 buckets of colostrum and I suspect
that they are still laughing and retelling the story to their friends 13
years later!!! I send them a basket of goodies each year at Christmas.
Don't let any of it bother you. We've all "been there."

Ok my turn to give you a chuckle. This will remind all of you who have
been doing this for awhile to try and remember to tell your new owners
every little thing :-)
When I bought my 6 animals I asked if I could have their fleece from this
year also. ( I learned to ask for that from this list ) ;-)
I have been learning to spin and have been using some of my fleeces. I had
wondered why some of the fibre I was using did not look as nice as what
was on the actual animals. My one older girl I was using to practice my
spinning with( I figured no sense in using my better fleeces for this) was
pretty hard to card. Her fleece seemed shorter and it was also dusty.
I asked my instructor if she could use the electric carder to do some for
me. she asked me why this was so dusty and short.
I was at my Alpacas breeders and was mentioning this to her on the weekend.
She almost went pale :-) Asked me how I was getting the fleece I told her
just taking handfuls out of the paper bags. I could see her getting woozy
thought she was going to faint. I knew then I had done something wrong.
First she apologized because the one girl I was using had not been skirted
so was still dusty.
Then she explained to me that the entire fleece was in the bags and I was
taking from the stomach and thighs and was ruining the integrity of the
fleece by yanking out handfuls.
When she took one and showed me how to open it up and select nice pieces I
was shocked at the difference. Went home and did my own. Man what I thought
was nice fleece before was nothing compared to the treasure I found inside
the rolled up blankets :-)
Sorry to be long but it was exciting all over again. So please don't take
anything for granted that us newbie's will know :-)
Lori
