Re: [Alpacasite] Gelding question?

Hi Alice,
I don't think you can get an exact answer regarding the behavioral aspects. Once the testicles are out, I would assume that they are infertile. No testicle, no sperm.
Our first male was gelded at 21 months and he still shows some interest in the girls, especially if he witnesses a true breeding. Otherwise, he is content to hang out with the girls/cria. The girls keep him in his place.
Our second male had a vasectomy before coming to us. His hormone level was active to say the least. We had him gelded when he was 7 years old. It took about a year for him to calm down. He resides with the girls/cria and is not a problem. Part of this may be due to the fact that we have a handful of girls that just won't take any crap when pregnant. This boy might look & think about "it", but is quickly reminded to bug-off.
Both of these boys are less feisty when in the male pen also.
Folks have written that they don't care to put geldings in the same housing with pregnant dams and for good reasons. I did this as a test because of changing my spacing/housing for winter, knowing that if it became stressful for the girls, the boys would have to be moved. The 2 abovementioned males also used to fight with each other. Once moved to the dominant females' barn, they are more concerned with protecting themselves from these nasty women and don't fight anymore.
Hope I've helped a bit. Seems to be an individualistic thing.
Chris

Subject: [Alpacasite] Gelding question?

Hi list,

I was wondering how long it take for one to see changes in behavior
after gelding? How long does the testosterone persist? How long before the
gelding is no longer fertile? I looking is several books including Eric Hoffman's,
Dr. Evans, and Fowler and could find nothing on the length of time that the
testosterone persists after gelding. My vet in horses it is 2-6 months. Anyone
know? Thanks, Alice
