RE: [AlpacaTalk] Orphan Cria!

Not sure. She does graze and eat grain. I will try bottle tonight along with grain. I am in VA. We have had so much rain. Vet says lots of parasite overloads. So frustrating! This dam was an excellent mom, too. I have mineral out 24/7 so she's got it if she wants it. Our bottle baby is eating well and has been cut back to 3 bottles and is doing well. He is a June 14 Cria, so very close in age.
Thanks for the advice.

Laura,
Is she chewing her cud? That's the true way to tell if she is able to sustain herself. If she was mine I would offer her  bottles for the next few days.Make sure she gets a taste of the goods.Start weighing her now so you know fast if she is not maintaining her weight.I guess is if she is hungry over the next few days, she will figure the bottle out.I am not a vet but I am an alpaca farmer for many years!Make sure you have minerals out that she can get to, some alfalfa for both cria would be good, along with alpaca/llama pellets...... Good luck!

Subject: [AlpacaTalk] Orphan Cria!

We have a June 20 Cria whose dam died yesterday. She is big and seems healthy, but is she old enough to survive without dams milk? I have another Cria born June 14 whose dam dejected and is on bottles of goats milk. This orphan Cria has never been in a bottle and I know it won't be easy. How likely is it she can survive without milk. I have always let moms wean so this is all new - having a baby with no mama.
Barber pole worms and parasites in general are flourishing in our extraordinary overly wet summer!
All have been treated with Cydectin but this dam showed no symptoms. She came running into the barn with all the others to eat and 15 minutes later she was dead! Never got her grain so no  choke.
