We make our hay boxes out of 2x4s, 2x2s, and plywood. They used to hold a 100 lb 2 tie bale, well, I guess they still do, but all of the hay growers changed to a 120 lb 3 tie bale. We made them 2" wider and longer than the dimensions of the bale. Put a bale in, remove the ties, and you're all set. Many of our feeders have grates made from lumber and portions of cattle panels.
