[AlpacaTalk] Maiden mom and new cria

Yesterday was herd health and we were working on the girls first.  I noticed my Penny Lane was laying on her side—something I never saw her do, before.  She is very pregnant and due Oct. 18……….well, she would get up and switch sides and the biggest clue of all that she wasn’t feeling herself is that she wasn’t’ eating.  That girl is always eating.  Then I saw her hind end and realized she truly was in labor.

Our last two were born Labor Day – Sunday and Monday but our oldest brood girls, ages 14 and 15.  They had them unassisted with us not around.  That is really the way I like it.

So, anyway, getting back to Penny.  She was straining and letting out some pretty pitiful sounds…….then a foot was out………..then a little nose………..where’s the other foot??  To make a long story less long, we could get that other foot out.  My friend and I both tried.  The vet was on her way and once she got there, I relaxed a bit.  She gloved up, reached in and found that leg tangled up behind the baby’s head……..pulled her out and our Lovely Rita was born.

Penny tore a bit so banamine and antibiotic were administered.  She also has very little milk……..not a surprise with these maiden moms.

Today, Rita is out and about but such a tiny thing.  11.2 lbs.

Main reason for writing………went in to check her tonight and she has this plum shaped bulb in place of her tiny little girl part. (vulva)  I called my friend, never had the happen, so called my vet.  She came out and had to cut a slit to open her up.  She got a shot of vitimins, antibiotic, and banamine to help her feel better.  She had a slight fever, so the antibiotic might be just what the Dr. ordered. Also drew blood for her IGG………….I don’t usually run them but with her being two weeks early, so tiny and issues, we think we better.

Has anyone else had this problem with any newborn crias?  Somewhere in the back of my head I have heard of this, but I don’t know from whom or when I learned of it.

We are done for the year……….3 girls out of 4 crias born.  Three white and one light brown.  If we can keep her happy and healthy, all will be right with the world.

Two maidens this year and both required help…………is this a prelude to what is likely to become the norm for  maidens?
