Re: [AlpacaTalk] RE: feeders

Actually, I really liked the goat troughs that Premier 1 was promoting in their e-blitz yesterday.  They have little separators so noses can only go just so far, and each alpaca can get a nose in without being nudged out of the way by the next.  They weren't expensive either - I think around $14.

<<<The biggest challenge is keeping the feed from spilling out the ends
when the piggies use their bottom teeth as shovels to scoop their way
from one end to another to get as much as possible so nobody else gets
any. >>>

I used to use individual plastic troughs - originally supposed to be
for wallpaper paste. I punched holes at the top corners and wired
them to the fences and could just walk the outside and dump each one's
feed with supplements in. I also punched small holes along the bottom
edge for drainage. These little troughs might solve your dilemma Judith
as they have ends on them and each one gets his/her own feeding
trough. The chickens like to hang around to catch any crumbs that fall
to the ground.

I had to stop using them when the Pyrs joined us last year and they
stand up to see if there are any crumbs left and in attempting to do
knocked them down one by one and then chewed them up.
Currently I am using large party plastic bowls ($1 for WalMart). I
have different colors and fill each one according to whatever that
particular paca is getting. These work well - they are flared at the
top so plenty of "face" room. Then I pick them all up so they are not
left out to get kicked about or chewed up.
The only thing I don't like about this system is feeding on the ground;
tho I feed in areas that are no where near potty facilities, I still
don't like it; and as mentioned stacking them puts the bottom of one
into the inside of another - not the best situation, but not a deal
breaker either.
