Honestly, Marsha - the metal dog brushes work just as well and are very cheap.  I have the Ashford hand carders and I can't tell the difference.  Then again, I also spin uncarded fleece because I'm lazy.  lol  It takes so much time to card, so I do it by hand just pulling the fleece with my fists a few times and then spinning it.  Most of the vm falls out when you spin anyway.
