Re: [AlpacaTalk] fertility issues
The male may be responsible for identical twins, if that trait is his family. Fraternal twins are the mother's deal. Two separate eggs.
I have read that female camelids drop two eggs, but usually only one implants. Apparently they know this because somewhere, I think Australia, embryo transfer is fairly common. So with a breeding between two superior animals, they do a uterine flush to take both fertilized eggs and implant them in two surrogate mothers. Then repeat the breeding with the first dam and sire. You get three crias with those hopefully superior genetics instead of one.
Anyway, about my girl. I've had her for about two years now. She is now 10 years old. She has had three 1st trimester abortions of twins, and a couple of other times where the breeding has slipped. I personally think it's time to return to her previous owner. I've written to them to see what they have to say about the situation.

I am no expert, but I am pretty sure the male has nothing to do with twinning. Like people, twins are the result of multiple eggs, nothing to do with the sperm. (Fraternal, that is) Identical twins are the result of the egg splitting, and again, on the female's side, not male's.
If she was mine, I think I would continue trying, as long as she is healthy.
Wishing you a better outcome, next time. I can only imagine your frustration.
