I totally agree that alpaca is being priced too low right now.  I think one of the major reasons is that the yarn stores are getting alpaca yarn from overseas and are paying much less.  I was horrified to recently find quality baby alpaca yarn at my local yarn store being sold for $7.99/120 yard skein!  I took the store owner aside and said they were selling it WAY too low - I mentioned our prices and those of other farms and websites.  They did raise their prices, but as a small farm, we just cannot compete.  The owner offered to sell my yarn through the store and expressed an interest in supporting local ranches, but we could not even come close to what they are paying for overseas yarn, so I opted instead to sell it myself.  I wish we could limit USA sales to USA alpaca like we do via the registry closing importation of animals.  I always try to buy Made in USA products anyway and hopefully more people are doing the same.
