Re: [AlpacaTalk] Flax seeds

We top dress them whole, to the alpacas. They grind their food up very well, and any seeds that might miss grinding the first time get well chewed when they chew the cud. We have never had flax growing in the fields in or around poop piles.

I think this is another one of those things that people tend to make more difficult than they really are! An additional benefit to storing the flax seed whole is that it doesn't go rancid.

Some people will also have you believe that the flax seed will get caught between the gum and teeth, causing abscesses, but again, this is not something we've seen happen. I doubt if flax seed is any more likely to get caught in the gums, than a bit of hay stem or any other manner of thing they find to eat.

re alpacas? I know you can buy flax seed meal (already ground up) but
it becomes rancid soon after grinding and loses its value, so I always
grind just what I need at the time. That would become cumbersome for
the livestock......but could be done.
