[AlpacaTalk] Hartman Alpaca Sale in Nebraska
<<<<I was so distraught and told him "How could you do such a thing? You
knew I was a widow without money!" He didn't care at all and basically
told me that's the way it goes.>>>>
Dear Elizabeth, I am so very sorry that you have had to go thru, are
going thru this. The heartlessness of mankind never ceases to amaze me.
First, my condolences on the loss of your husband. I lost my best
friend of 25yrs/partner/
that the year after he died I was taken advantage of more times in that
one year than in my previous 50+ years combined. It was unbelievable to
me; as in I couldn't believe it kept happening with everyone I had
interaction with. My husband was the kind of man that would help anyone
anytime with anything. He would give you the shirt off his back. I
can't count how many people we/he helped out. It was second nature to
him. I took it for granted; just assumed most people were like that.
Nope. I must have had a big red screw me sign on my grief stricken over
burdened shoulders because by golly that is what every single male
person did that to hired to help out around here, or purchase a trailer
from, or do any sort of business or interaction with. I am a nice
person and never expect anything else of others. Naive I suppose. But
over and over I was screwed and ripped off in more ways than I can count
and just when there was no money to compensate for the losses. It was
really a tough year (or two). Just when I could have most used some
kindness I got crap.
I am speechless and horrified at what has happened to you......and your
alpacas. I am beyond angry that there are people like that out there.
I hope that you will be able to bring him down; you mentioned the BBB.
I hope they will be helpful. In my limited experience with them they
are virtually useless. However, by sharing your sad story on this list
and hopefully on the other alpaca lists as well, you will help spread
the word about this man and his auction. In the day of the internet
noone can get away with that sort of business practices for long.
Perhaps Heather, or those who know more about the industry than do I,
would have some ideas on how to put a stop to this atrocious practice.
I cannot even begin to imagine the heartache and worry you must be
carrying. If it is some small consolation to you, I have several dearly
loved alpacas that came via auctions. I have never been to an auction,
but I know several of the alpacas that I have purchased over the years
have traveled thru several states and several auctions. My dear Charlie
Brown's papers showed that his entire life (3yo) had been nothing but
being trucked from one auction to the next, in many different states.
He was a sorry sight when I purchased him from an individual. Had on a
halter that clearly had never been taken off as his skin had grown
around it. His ears stayed flat to his head for at least 6 mos after he
arrived here. I worked some of Marty McGee's magic with him, even took
him to one of her seminars where she worked with him, and over time he
came to trust me. I told him time and again that he was home to stay.
His ears came up. He gave me many years of joy and affection and I hope
I did the same for him (he passed away about 2 yrs ago). The male I
have now came via auction and somewhere along the line thru Canada (I
purchased from an individual). He now has a good home here; and here he
will stay, just like all the others, until he is buried here among his
friends. I also have a female, purchased from an individual, that
traveled the auction route. I tell you all this simply to let you know
that these animals can land in good homes. I don't breed or show, I
just love them. Perhaps yours will be as lucky.
As far as what to do with alpacas when one can no longer care for them.
I know of one llama/alpaca rescue in my state, so there must be others
across the country. Also, I would think it would be easy to sell these
magnificent creatures for $500-$1000 every day of the week? A pittance
to someone who has paid tens of thousands of dollars, but certainly
better than $35 or even $175. I am sure there must be plenty of folks
out there like myself that love these guys but are not interested in
breeding or showing, just love having them around, and can't afford the
high prices.
My thoughts are with you. Please keep us informed. And let me know if
there is anything I can do to help you in any way.
Warmly, Janice in NW GA
