Re: [AlpacaTalk] fly predators

Hi Emaly,

We used fly predators two years in a row and they didn't work well for
us because we have a small cattle hobby farm two houses away that does not use
them. We get all their flies, which is why we don't use fly traps anymore,
either, they just attracted more of them. We start fly predators in CA in
March and stop in October/November, but we have very mild winters.

Now we feed all our animals diatomaceous earth, which keeps down the
flies (the maggots die in the manure piles and never hatch into flies). This
year we never had a winter at all and the flies never died off, so the fly
problem this spring/summer is going to be very bad. I think we'll try a
combination of things this year, not sure which yet.

Spring is upon us, and I was curious to hear if anyone has used fly
predators to control their fly population? If so, how did it work? When
did you start & stop? I'm sure part of that is based upon geography and
climate- I'm in central Indiana. Thanks, Emaly
