[AlpacaTalk] My Boy Won't Eat Grain - Help!
I have a full-term 4-1/2 month old boy who has not been gaining
weight like he should. He was acting normally until cold weather
started to set in. Actually, at 1 month old he was able to get full
grown dams to cush for him so he could mount them and "play mate" and
was really thriving and growing like a weed. Since the cooler
weather started he tends to lay under the hay feeder all the time.
He comes out to nurse, but otherwise camps out under the hay feeder
and doesn't play or doing his notorious mounting ritual anymore. He
won't eat grain (which I think is his biggest problem). The manager
at the farm where I agist my Suris is going to buy some supplements
to grind up and feed them to him and another cria who isn't
thriving. They have also started both of them on Thyro L medicine
and vitamins and have done fecals which were negative for any
parasites. Next step is to do a blood test to see what else could be
going on. My boy seems to be of good body score, and chews his cud
constantly..
through a spell like this, and it is not cause for alarm, but his has
lasted too long. I'm stumped. He is not in decline (yet), but has
lost some ounces this week. Has anyone ever experienced this
situation and/or does anyone have any insight/wisdom to share? I've
only been in the business 2-1/2 years and have never had this type of
situation yet!
Thanks in advance,
