Perhaps the problem is the expecations that AOBA has put on the show,
and the amount of money spent.
Seems to me that if one overspends on on facilities and amenities -
knowing from experience what the attendence is likely to be - then
the complaint that the show loses money really should be directed at
the planning rather than the geographic location.
The Portland, OR show was quite successful from the perspective of
those in the Pacific Northwest. It is not the fault of the PNW that
AOBA overspent.
A Central California show could be equally successful, as could a
Denver Show, a Sante Fe show, a Bangor, Maine show, or even a
Bismark, ND show.
Plan for the reality, not for the dream.
Of course, a qualifying system would actually allow for this (and
likely reduce costs). Imaging a system where the National show had
some prestige, was a reasonable size, and for which regional
affiliates might compete for the opportunity to host.
The only thing the National show currently has going for it is that
it a) coincides with the conference, and b) tries to be the largest
show in the country year after year.
The problems with the National show are a) those showing usually do
not have time for other conference activities, and b) the size
severely limits the number of appropriate venues.
