[AlpacaTalk] RE: Beet Pulp
<<Hi List,
Steve Hull says that Beet pulp is great stuff..however, he and Dr. Ruth both
warn against using molasses added products on alpacas who don't digest the
sugar like a horse would. So.for the pacas.plain beet pulp, added slowly to
the diet as Laurel reminds us..is the very best way to use this nice stuff!

So much to know! Never heard that about molasses/sugar and alpacas. I
am almost certain that the alpaca feed I use, made by Southern States
using Dr. Evans formula (according to him) has molasses in it! Don't
know about the beet pulp - will have to go check the label. Thanks for
the heads up.
If alpacas don't digest sugar well then I am guessing all the apples
they have been eating are not good for them?? They love them and gobble
up every one that they can reach - the apple trees are next to their
pasture. They also eat every leaf off the limbs they can reach. They
also love figs (and the leaves) and eat all the ones they can reach,
even standing on their hind legs to reach high up into the fig tree -
that is in their pasture. Do you think this is a problem? I can stop
the apples for the most part (not all , but most), but short of cutting
down the fig tree I cannot stop them eating those; and as figs are one
of my income producing crops, and I get a lot from this tree, even after
they have eaten the lower ones, I would hate having to cut it down :-(.
The chickens and ducks also stand under it and race to get any that
fall. We had a Japanese Beetle infestation this summer and my 10yo dd
would go shake the limbs and a shower of Jap Beetles and over ripe figs
would come raining down. The chix/ducks would go nuts! What a great
fun way to control Jap Beetles :-).
Warmly, Janice
