[AlpacaTalk] RE: DE questions
<<Janice - I don't sprinkle the DE on our manure piles because they are
cleaned daily and it would be a waste. I feed it internally to all the
animals on
our ranch except for the goats because our pygmies can't have grain. I gave
the recommended feeding dosages in a prior email to AlpacaTalk on 10-10-08.
I feed it once a day mixed into their grain/pellets. You can spray water on
it in the feed to help keep down the dust if you feed it right away, but I
don't. It also keeps grain and pellets from molding, so I mix ours
directly in
the feed cans with the grain/pellets right when the bags are delivered.

Thanks Susan! I went back thru my mail as I did not remember reading
dosages anywhere in this thread. Discovered that is the one digest I
had not read! And it has a lot of posts about snail control after my
questions about ducks aNd guineas. Now I have to go back and read all
that :-).
Thanks for the detailed dosage amts. I really appreaciate it and am
sold! Will be searching for a nice big 40# bag of FOOD quality DE asap!
Do you order yours on line?
Now another question. You say you mix it in the feed cans as well? In
addition to adding daily to their food? How much do you mix in say a
50# bag of feed? And would you use the same quantity for horse feed,
dog feed, goat feed, cat food?
What about chix feed? The fowl is where our worst fly problems
originate. Have used about a million sticky fly strips in the chicken
pen and they will become full almost within an hour of putting up!
So what I am assuming is that by ingesting it comes out in the same form
and is in their poop IOW, not digested and changed in form so the fly
larva crawling across it are killed?
Now another question I have always had about DE and why I have never
used it internally is this......I know what it is and like previously
said used it decades ago to dust the house for flea control. I know
that it works by mechanical means. IOW, the microscopic sharp edges
slice thru the little worm and cause it to dehydrate and die. All well
and good. This is also the same reason it is considered dangerous to
inhale as those little sharp edges will cause microscopic damage to the
lining of the lung. But what about the digestive tract? Has anyone
here using DE ever read any studies about possible damage to the
intestinal tract? What if it causes microscopic tears to the mucosa
lining? What I know as a human nutritionist (holistic) is that small
microscopic damage to the intestinal mucosa leads to what is called
"leaky gut syndrome" and leads to a world of problems down the line.
Now if my dogs and cats would just sleep in the same place all the time
maybe I could conquer these horrid fleas as well! Even with Frontline
and Advantage/tix my dog has suffered for the past 2 years with fleas.
I wonder how DE would work against tapeworms? All the cats I recently
took in have tapes. I can't afford to take them all to the vet who will
NOT give me a prescription to fill on line without an exam AND
fecal.....can we say hundreds of dollars for barn cats? I mean come on,
I KNOW what tapeworms look like (but don't get me started on vets
again.....money grubbing slime balls. Whoops sorry it just slipped out.
Warmly, Janice in GA
