Re: [AlpacaTalk] RE: Odd Injury
Janice:
First off, let me preface this by saying I hope that I don't offend
you with what I am about to say! It sounds like you are about toasty
fried! And though you have some things that need to be tended to in
a very timely manner, I'm thinking you need to find at least a few
hours to sit down, put your feet up, get yourself a nice drink of
your favorite beverage (be that alcohol or non-alcohol)
piece of chocolate, a cookie -- some comfort food, and just kick it
back and relax!!! If you go down, nothing will be taken care of, so
it's time to give a little to yourself....
the house, too! Meditate, pray -- whatever does it for YOU! At
least try to empty your head a little -- sounds like your brain (and
body) need a rest!
After you've had a little well deserved rest, call the vet. If there
is an infection starting, you very likely are going to need
antibiotics. Let the vet make the call on what is needed. I know
that vets are expensive, but some infections aren't worth trying to
take on by yourself. Penicillin is an inexpensive drug that s/he
(vet) may find effective...
vet. And as far as I know all antibiotics are by prescription --
again, your vet can sell it to you -- I get a lot of stuff from my
local vet who doesn't work with my alpacas, but get recommendations
either from Ohio State or over the phone from my camelid vet and then
get the drug from the local guy. If you're strapped for cash (aren't
most of us?) let the vet know that in regards to what s/he
prescribes. If you're unsure of the dosage (or don't completely
trust the vet -- and for some drugs camelids require more than
cattle) check the Evans manual or post on here for someone to look it up.
Finally, my guess is the wound is from fighting teeth. At this point
however, it doesn't matter "why", but "what" you can do for the
wound. I have a boy who had a puss filled wound that wasn't known
about until he got into it with his brother and re-opened the
wound. These two bummed around together but could get into some real
short lived bouts of fighting....
the fighting decreased. Point is, yes, the wound could be much older
than you are aware of and that happens all the time. It's not your
fault.......
in private. As for the fighting teeth, they can be sawed off with
ob wire - very abrasive stuff - or they can be ground down with a
dremel. While you have the vet out, ask him to sedate the boy and
take his fighting teeth down. It's a quick and painless procedure,
but the animal does need to cooperate a little. Then when you shear,
check their teeth. Only takes a few seconds using ob wire attached
to two wooden handles -- easy little tool to make with thick dowel
rods and a foot or two of ob wire.
I hope that it all works out well........
can. But PLEASE give yourself a little rest! It will do wonders in
all other areas of your life, which sound very busy at the moment!!
Keep us posted and good luck!!
