Re: [AlpacaTalk] sugar beets

The farm where we agist has used it with lean girls who need extra weight. The beets are dessicated so we mix with warm water and also use some whole oats (like for people's porridge) as well as a bit of rolled corn and some pellets. This mixture is very palatable and keeps the girls from getting too lean while their crias nurse. It is easy to mix up a batch and let it sit for a few minutes to absorb the water.

hi - does anyone use sugar beets as a feed supplement for their alpacas / llamas?

I have been reading about farms that use it (for alpacas) in the UK and it reminded me of when i used to feed sugar beets to my horses many years ago. They loved it and it made a nice warm feed during the cold wet weather.

It would be good to hear from anyone who uses or has used sugar beets - or if anyone knows of a reason NOT to use it as an alpaca feed supplement.

Thanks,
Wendy
